(formerly New Zealand Defence Technologies Inc) was originally formed in 1993 to foster and co-ordinate interest by New Zealand companies in the ANZAC frigate project. In this, the group and its members were very successful. The concept of joint action worked well, particularly in providing networking opportunities and as a catalyst for companies to form joint ventures where particular skills were complementary.

The group has since widened its activities to promote general defence opportunities as well as specific projects. eg the “multi role vessel” and the “patrol boats” for the Royal New Zealand Navy. Most members see networking and the commercial benefits gained as the primary reason for membership. There is an active focus on promoting export opportunities, in conjunction with TradeNZ, the Government Trade Development Board.

Members of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and the New Zealand Ministry of Defence (MOD) are active supporters and participants in NZDIA activities. They are not commercial members but participate through their Industry Liaison Managers who work closely with New Zealand companies, to promote commercial opportunities in the supply of products and services to NZDF and MOD. This relationship and the experience gained from dealing with defence has assisted a number of members in their export activities with offshore defence purchasing departments.
